Ensembles that meet during the school day, perform at concerts and special events, and receive 1 academic credit.
The Wind Ensemble brings together the school's most talented wind, brass, and percussion players to perform the finest wind music from a repertoire that spans the 16th through the 21st centuries. The ensemble attends festivals, assessments, workshops, and performs 4-6 times per school year.
This year we went on tour to Philadelphia to study with Temple University Bands and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city.
Students in grades 10-12 earn a place in this ensemble through auditions held each March.
The Symphonic Band is made up of wind, brass, and percussion students in grades 9-12. This ensemble is split into two classes:
Symphonic Band Woodwinds/Brass - Meets everyday during 1st period. This class focuses on fundamentals of wind instrument musicianship, ensemble skills, and music theory. Students in this class study and perform chamber music as well as full band repertoire.
Symphonic Band Percussion - Meets every other day. This class focuses on fundamentals of percussion musicianship, ensemble skills, and music theory. Students in this class study and perform percussion ensemble music as well as full band repertoire.
Ensembles that rehearse after school, perform at special events, and receive 0.5 credit per semester.
Marching Yellow Jackets - FaLL Semester
The Marching Yellow Jackets is the musical heart and soul of OP during the fall sports season. The band performs at football games, Homecoming rallies, King's Dominion, parades, and local community events. Students attend special rehearsals and band camp over the summer to memorize music and prepare marching drill that excites the crowd. Each show the drumline, woodwinds, brass, and color guard collaboratively create a dynamic outdoor musical experience!
Marching Band also gives students opportunities to serve and grow as leaders through the OP Band Council. Band Council leaders help teach music, clean drill, organize events, and vote on special student decisions in the band program. Student leaders attend special leadership training sessions each summer paid for by the Band Boosters.
Marching band students are active in many clubs, sports, and other school activities throughout the year. Band students are encouraged to share their time with band AND other passions.
Students who participate in marching band for 2 years receive a special high school varsity letter!

JAcket jazz - Spring Semester
The Jacket Jazz Band attracts some of OP's finest wind and percussion students. This ensemble meets two times a week during the spring semester and performs a wide range of music. Swing, Latin, rock, funk, soul, blues, and dixieland to name a few! Students in Jacket Jazz perform in the Manassas community and at special school events like the annual Talent Show and Freshman Orientation.
Students grades 9-12 are eligible to audition for this ensemble.
